Sony has a major ambition to make PS4 the home of fighting games, says Capcom, whose upcoming brawler Street Fighter V is exclusive to Sony’s platform.
Speaking in an interview with PlayStation Blogcast host Justin Masongill, Capcom USA Community Manager Peter "The ComboFiend" Rosas spoke frankly about working on PS4 and the relationship the developer now has with Sony.
“I mean the relationship with Sony is fantastic, and it’s so much more than a co-marketing deal,” said Rosas. “They really share the same vision for where we would like to take the fighting game space over time, and they understand there’s a lot of growth potential there.”
Rosas also revealed that Sony’s input has also helped them achieve the goal of making Street Fighter V on PS4 cross-platform with PC.
“And they’re able to help us out on a technical side of things,”he said. So this is the first time we’re able to pull off cross-platform play; that’s going to unite our community to a centralized player base, and it’s going to be essential for how we manage our competitive scene moving forward.
He also stressed that Capcom will likely continue the strong relationship they’ve built with Sony moving forward.
“Sony have been great partners, they have the ambition of making sure that the PlayStation 4 is the home of fighting games, and we’re there to support them, and it’s a wonderful collaboration between both our companies,” he concluded.
During the interview, Rosas also briefly spoke about the Street Fighter V character roster. With fans eager to find out more about whether new characters will be added to the franchise, Rosas teased fans. Though he didn’t go into any detail, he did remark:
“We’re proud of the roster that we’ve come up and there will be new characters in the game that are entirely new to the franchise.”
During E3 this year, Capcom unveiled a new trailer that details Street Fighter V’s new features, including the V-triggers and V-skills, which add another layer of strategy to the in-depth fighting game. Street Fighter V is due for release on PS4 and PC in 2016. A firm launch date has yet to be confirmed.
