New Shenmue 3 footage shown in China, day/night cycle detailed

New footage of Shenmue 3 has been showcased during a presentation in China this week by creator Yu Suzuki, showcasing the hotly anticipated sequel’s day/night cycle in action.

While in the early stages of development, Suzuki-san revealed that game’s lighting will change depending on the position of the sun in-game, although noted they are still implementing rain and snow into the mix. The footage was captured on a PC, which Suzuki-san acknowledged wasn’t running quite as smoothly as it should.

Shenmue 3 was announced at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference after being stuck in development hell for more than a decade, where the game was launched via a Kickstarter initiative. The game went on to raise $6.3 million and became the fastest video game project on the crowd funding website to hit the one million mark. The game is currently slated for a December 2017 release on PlayStation 4 and PC, and will see the return of series veteran, Corey Marshall, who voiced protagonist Ryo Hazuki in the first two games.

Shenmue was originally conceived as a Sega Saturn title before moving to the Dreamcast, and was released in Japan in 1999. The game was later localised for the west in 2000, and spawned a sequel, 2001’s Shenmue II, which hit the Dreamcast in Japan and Europe. U.S. gamers had to wait until the game was ported to the Xbox in 2002 however, as the Dreamcast’s demise resulted in the game’s release being canceled in North America. The franchise has maintained an extremely loyal cult following ever since, and has consistently remained one of the most-requested series to be resurrected; fortunately, Sony has seen fit to back Suzuki-san for the hotly anticipated Shenmue 3.
