PlayStation VR will ship millions, says Megaton Rainfall dev

Pentadimensional Games, the developer behind the upcoming indie superhero title, Megaton Rainfall, has spoke at length on Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR headset during an interview with WCCFTech.

Megaton Rainfall is among the first batch of games that will utilise the virtual reality device, and studio co-founder, Alfonso del Cerro, feels that the upcoming headset is likely to enjoy great success on the market, shipping millions worldwide.

In addition, he also highlighted some of the technical advantages of PlayStation VR in comparison to competing devices on PC.

“I think PSVR will ship millions… Here in Spain I know a lot more people who own a PlayStation 4 than a high-end PC ready for VR. Technically, what surprised me the most was the reprojection feature. It generates 120 frames per second, taking into account the movement of the head, even when the game fails to achieve 60 frames per second. Which means that there is no jittering at all. You can play Megaton Rainfall for 1 hour and won’t see any frame out of sync. I can’t say the same for the VR experiences on my PC. Megaton Rainfall will work at 60 fps in PSVR (120 with reprojection).”

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation VR will launch in the first half of 2016, although a price point has yet to be announced. However, the format holder will host a special PS VR-related event at GDC next week, where it is expected the company will pin a price and launch date on the device.

PlayStation VR will be compatible with a number of high-profile PS4 titles, including Ace Combat 7, Dreams, Gran Turismo Sport and Tekken 7. Sony originally unveiled its virtual reality tech at GDC 2014, where the device was then known under the working title of Project Morpheus.

In terms of competing devices, PS VR will be pitted against HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, both of which will cost a pretty penny at $799 and $599, respectively. Commenters have noted that Sony could put itself in a favorable position in the virtual reality battle if it positions PS VR at a sub-$500 price point.
