PS4 price drop to combat Xbox Scorpio release, says Pachter

ps4 price cut

A PS4 price drop announcement could be made shortly by Sony, reckons industry analyst Michael Pachter.

In an interview with Gaming Bolt, the Wedbush analyst also passed comment on whether PS4 sales would takeover PS2 sales.

“I don’t think it will outsell the PS2, mostly because the competition from Xbox and Switch will soak up too much of the addressable market,” he said. “Yes, if they price the PS4 correctly, they can sell another 18 million, and I think the forecast suggests that there is a price cut coming.”

In Germany, there was recently a PS4 price cut on the Slim model, but it was only a one-day deal. With Microsoft’s recent announcement of Xbox Scorpio, however, Sony will likely try and encourage more PS4 sales by dropping the price of its current consoles permanently.

Earlier this year, Pachter also said that Sony won’t release a new console to compete against Xbox Scorpio. He reckons the PS5 release date won’t be before 2019. If this is correct, then a reduction in the current price of PS4 models will be the right move.

Xbox Scorpio is due for release in ‘Holiday 2017’, but Microsoft has yet to reveal its retail price. If there is going to be a PS4 price drop it’s likely that Sony will wait until the price of Xbox Scorpio has been revealed before deciding how much that cut should be.
