It seems Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V once again had an amazing sales month this past August, which shouldn’t be that surprising anymore given how the title has hit one sales milestone after another. Well, it seems to have hit one more, and it could be the biggest one ever.
According to the NPD Group, not only was Grand Theft Auto V the best-selling game in August of 2017, only behind Madden 18 which was released in that month, but the analyst firm states that it’s the best-selling game of all time in terms of revenue and tracked unit sales across PC, console and portable with digital and packaged combined. For context, GTAV was released way back in 2013 — four years ago — and it still managed to land in second place last month! Important to note that NPD does NOT keep track of all digital game sales, so heavyhitting games like PlayerUnknown’s Batltlegrounds (which has hit 10 million unit sold ), aren’t accounted for.

NPD’s Ma Piscatella states that GTAV has been out in the market for 49 months, and out of that, it has achieved 41 top 10 chart appearances — 16 more times than any other single title in reported history. GTA V sales are further buoyed by GTA Online, which has been a big hit for the company.
If this keeps up, Rockstar can live off of Grand Theft Auto V’s sales until GTAVI. Oh, and don’t forget, Rockstar also has Red Dead Redemption 2 shooting out sometime next year, so that’s another game that should perform very, very well at retail.
