Bully dev on possible sequel: ‘you never know’

The co-founder of Rockstar Games has expressed interest in developing another Bully title.

Speaking to Polygon, Dan Houser said, “I know I want to,” in response to whether the company may revisit the series. “Well, hopefully, you never know.”

Bully, aka Canis Canem Edit in Europe, was released in 2006 for the PlayStation 2, and later turned up on PC, Wii and Xbox 360. Set in a school environment, players control troublesome student Jimmy Hopkins, as he attends classes, brawls with other students, commits small-time crimes and increases his notoriety on school grounds.

Despite its success however, a sequel has never materialized despite rumors claiming a follow-up was in the pipeline.

And, while Houser said that Rockstar has “a lot of directions’ they could take with Bully 2, it wouldn’t feature an adult Hopkins in the GTA character mould.

"I never saw him as being that level of degenerate," Houser said. "I saw him as a bad teen, because he comes from a tough home, who could go either direction. He’s not going to be a carjacker. He’s too white collar for that already. He’s at a shit private school, but he’s going to end up being really happy because he’s at the worst bit of his life, or being a sort of messed up white collar doofus.

"He was an unpleasant soul, but he had a heart. To some extent you could say the same was true of [Grand Theft Auto 4’s] Niko in a bizarre way. But [Jimmy’s] not trying to burn down the school, he’s more trying to stand up to injustice."

Speculation has gathered pace that Bully could be returning after a new trademark for the series was filed by Rockstar in July.
