Confirmed: Sony shuts down studio behind SOCOM, MAG

Following rumors from last week about Sony shutting down Zipper Interactive — and layoffs from last year — it seems that the studio behind PlayStation-exclusive franchises such as SOCOM and MAG is indeed closing up shop.

In a response to last week’s allegations, Sony issued an official statement to Game Informer:

“Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm the closure of Zipper Interactive, a Seattle-based internal game development studio that has been part of the global development operation of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS),” said Sony.

Having just released Unit 13 for the Vita, Zipper will apparently still continue to support the portable title with daily challenges.

Sony says that this closure is a result of a “normal cycle of resource re-alignment,” so we hope that for their sake, no one is out of a job.
