EA acquires PopCap Games for $750 million

After a few weeks of rumor and speculation, PopCap Games is indeed being bought by Electronic Arts. This acquisition is costing EA $750 million; not surprising since that means the company behind smash-hits like Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies is now a subsidiary of EA.

"EA and PopCap are a compelling combination," said John Riccitiello, CEO of EA. "PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA’s global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels."

"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games," said David Roberts, CEO of PopCap. "By working with EA, we’ll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."

PopCap already has its hands in the pot of multiple worldwide platforms such as Facebook, Google, Adnroid, and iOS. It remains to be seen what plan of action EA has in store for existing PopCap IPs – and future ones.
