Inside PlayStation Network – Assault Heroes

The digital delights of Sony’s scrumptious PlayStation Network service know no bounds. Aside from letting punters compete in online gaming, stream films, browse the Internet and more, its premier attraction rests in the copious supply of downloadable games ripe for the picking. From PSN exclusives to PSOne Classics, minis and plain old add-on content, Sony’s online space is chock full of goodies battling it out for your hard-earned digital dollars.

Welcome back to another installment of Inside PlayStation Network, where every Monday – Friday we’ll pluck a PSN release—be it new or old—and put it in the spotlight for a thorough dissection. Fancy getting a new PSN game but don’t know what one to plump for? Perhaps this feature will help. Didn’t realize that a game was available in your region until now? We’ve got you covered. Or, perhaps you were musing over what those lucky Japanese folk were tucking into over in the Land of the Rising Sun? You can be sure our coverage will extend to those rare regional exclusives as much as those firmly embedded on the public consciousness.

For our latest entry, we toy about with top-down shooter, Assault Heroes.

Originally showing up on Xbox LIVE back in 2008, Assault Heroes finally made a push for PSN in early 2010 accompanied by a welcome budget price tag. Coming up fairly lightweight in the narrative department, this bite-sized blaster has players controlling a surviving member of an elite Special Forces Unit, who have been tasked with infiltrating a secret underground lab that’s suspected of producing weapons of mass destruction. All you need concern yourself with, however, is that there’s a bunch of alien scumbags on your case and it’s up to you to eliminate them.

Assault Heroes offers up a diverse selection of vehicles to pilot, including a tough-as-nails armored jeep and blindingly fast speedboat. Once you’re up and running, it’s as simple as blasting everything in sight, either solo or with a mate backing you up in two-player offline/online co-op. And you’ll do plenty of blasting, thanks to the myriad of weapons at your disposal, including meaty flamethrowers, flak cannons, ice cannons, grenades and even nukes.

You’ll need them too, as there’s a heap of different enemies looking to turn your craft into scrap metal, including standard grunts as well as hulking bosses to topple. Players can blast through three different difficulty levels, as well as rise through the ranks in an effort to nab up to 12 Trophies. Outside of the main campaign, there’s also a selection of bonus levels up for grabs too, as well as the chance to grind your way up the obligatory leaderboards.

Tune in again tomorrow as we once again go gallivanting around Inside PlayStation Network.
