PlayStation 3 is now five years old in Europe, having launched in PAL regions on March 23, 2007.
Of course, back then the machine would set you back a wallet-draining £425/€599 at launch, and came some five months after the release of its U.S. counterpart.
In terms of software, Sony’s black behemoth launched with a slew of new IPs such as MotorStorm and Resistance, plus plenty of third-party support from the likes of Namco (Ridge Racer 7) SEGA (Virtua Fighter 5) and Activision (Call of Duty 3).
The launch itself was pretty successful by all accounts, with PS3 moving roughly 600,000 units in just 48 hours. Furthermore, Sony estimated it flogged around €400 million worth of hardware, games and peripherals over launch weekend.
To date, the console has sold four million units in the U.K.
So, Euro PSU readers, how many of you picked up a PS3 on launch day? I purchased my 60GB unit in August 2007 and I’m impressed to say it’s still in fine working order.
