Capcom has been working on a new entry in cult beat-‘em-up franchise Darkstalkers since last year, according to Internet reports.
VentureBeat got the scoop from an inside source, which claims Darkstalkers 4 is indeed in development with Street Fighter IV overlord Yoshinori Ono at the helm.
According to the site, the new game will utilize a modified version of Street Fighter x Tekken’s game engine, with Ono-san having started work on the project after wrapping up SF x Tekken in late 2011.
The news follows on from Capcom filing a Darkstalkers trademark with the European Union trademarks office on February 14, the first time it has done so since 2004.
Ono-san has been quite vocal about his desire to cobble together a new game in the vampire-based fighting series. Back in March 2011, it emerged Capcom had received 100,000 requests from fans for a new Darkstalkers title, a marked increase from August 2010’s 5000 effort.
More recently, the PlayStation version of the arcade original, Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors, hit PlayStation Network as a downloadable title in November 2011.
Stay tuned for more info as we get it.
