Sony has moved to defend the choice of free games offered in the platform holder’s PlayStation Network ‘Welcome Back’ initiative.
The electronics giant was recently met with criticism from PSN users due to the fact many punters already owned most of, if not all games up for grabs.
However writing on the EU PlayStation Blog, Nick Caplin, head of communications at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), defended the titles on offer, which include PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable heavyweights such has inFamous and Killzone: Liberation.
"We’ve tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles," he said. "The average metacritic rating for these games is over 84 per cent, so these are high quality games."
Sony is offering users a choice of two games as a means of compensation for PSN’s recent downtime, though users who already own the games or are not interested in the titles available won’t be able to swap them for something different.
"Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone," explained Caplin.
In addition to the above freebies, Sony is also offering 30 days of free subscription to its PlayStation Plus service for new members, while existing customers will bag 60 days of free subscription.
