Ubisoft will continue to dominate the Canadian landscape with the addition of a new studio in Toronto, bringing with it more than 800 new jobs to the nation’s most populous city. The Ontario government has pledged $260 million to help Ubisoft create the new studio in Toronto. Ubisoft already has studios in Quebec, Vancouver, and Montreal.
The announcement was made today by the Premiere of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, during a live press conference. Standing in front of a backdrop that read “New Jobs for Ontario,” McGuinty explained that 75% of Ontario residents play video games. “This isn’t kid’s stuff; and this isn’t child’s play. This is serious business,” he said.
The new studio will be headed by Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat, who explained that the Toronto studio will focus on creating “triple-A games,” and with it, more than 800 jobs over the course of the next 10 years. The Toronto Studio will take a nod from its Montreal counterpart by relying on the groundwork laid by all of Ubisoft’s other studios. Toronto’s thriving-cultural scene and growing pool of gaming and film industry talents make the city a perfect spot for a new Ubisoft studio.
