Watch Dogs uses ‘a brand new engine,’ not the same as Assassin’s Creed engine, confirms Ubisoft

Since the debut of its intense, new gameplay footage last week, many have noted how the character movements and animations in PlayStation 4 launch title Watch Dogs mirror those of the Assassin’s Creed series. The apparent similarities led to common speculation that Watch Dogs is being built from the same Anvil engine that has powered Assassin’s Creed since 2007.

Yesterday on Twitter, Ubisoft Technical Director of Graphics Sebastien Viard put the rumors to rest by releasing an interesting tidbit about the new IP:

“Watch Dogs uses a brand new engine called Disrupt, developed specifically for the game at Ubisoft Montreal. It’s not Assassin’s Creed engine”
