Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag detailed

Ubisoft has unleashed a boatload of information on its historical action-adventure sequel, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

As previously reported, the game will centre on Edward Kenway, the grandfather of Assassin’s Creed III protagonist, Connor Kenway. A former Royal Navy privateer, Kenway soon finds himself embroiled in piracy and the centuries-old battle between the Assassins and the Templars.

Set during the early 1700s during the Golden Age of Piracy, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will see players coming face-to-face with some of history’s most notorious pirates, including Blackbeard and Charles Vane.

Featuring a sprawling open-world to explore, Black Flag will take gamers to over 50 locations, and fuses naval warfare with the traditional land-based exploits the series has become renowned for. Furthermore, Kenway can also dive to the ocean’s depths to uncover lost treasures and battle deadly marine life.

“With the new hero and new setting we are creating the boldest and most unique Assassin’s Creed game yet, while still respecting the pillars of the franchise that have made it such a fan favorite,” commented Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot. “Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag is based on a true, harsh and exciting part of a legendary era and will thrill longtime fans and newcomers alike.”

The game has been in the works for almost two years, and is in development at Ubisoft Montreal, with additional help coming from the company’s Annecy, Bucharest, Kiev, Quebec, Singapore and Sofia studios.

Black Flag features 60 minutes of extra gameplay for PS3 and PS4, which can be downloaded via PlayStation Network.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will ship for PS4, PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and Wii U in the U.K. on November 1, with a U.S. release due at the end of October. Collector’s Editions will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
