Rumor: PS4 developers have access to 7GB RAM

Developers working on Sony’s PlayStation 4 have access to 7GB RAM out of the massive 8GB available for the next-generation console.

That’s according to an unnamed studio speaking to website PS4Daily, which claims that the remaining 1GB is allocated to background tasks and the operating system.

While this is short of the total 8GB available, it still offers a prodigious amount of memory to play around with in comparison to the PS3, which offers just 512MB.

It’s just as well Sony’s new machine has all that memory too, as it’ll be put to good use. The PS4 allows for a myriad of new operations, such streaming another person’s gameplay, background downloading and various social features running behind-the-scenes.

Sony waited until February to unveil the full specs for PS4; it initially only shipped dev kits with 4GB RAM to developers, remaining tight-lipped on the true figure until the reveal event.

Sony has announced a holiday 2013 ship date for PS4, with more information on the system expected to drop at E3. Stay tuned.
