Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic masterpiece The Last of Us has topped the U.S. sales charts for the month of June 2013, the latest NPD data has confirmed.
Exact sales figures were not divulged, though the NPD’s Liam Callahan confirmed that the PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure had the second highest first-month sales of any first-party PS3 title to date – topped only by 2010’s God of War III.
Said Callahan: “The Last of Us was also the third highest game to launch during the month of June since NPD began tracking sales in 1995.”
However, last month saw total spend dip by 15 per cent year-on-year, declining from $700.6 million in June 2012 to $593.3 million. Overall software sales sunk to $313.8 million; an overall decrease of 14 per cent.
In terms of hardware, Xbox 360 took the crown as the best-selling console with 140,000 units shifted. Note that the NPD tallies home platforms and handhelds separately, so even though 3DS technically sold the most out of any games system, 360 still bagged the top spot.
Once again, Sony is keeping mum as to how many PS3s and PS Vitas it managed to flog last month, though we assume The Last of Us contributed to a rise in uptake of the former.
