PS4 sales edge out Xbox One in February

According to VentureBeat, NPD data shows that Sony is still riding high on the success of the PlayStation 4, but the company’s lead in February was very slim.

A statement from NPD video game analyst Liam Callahan states, “PS4 led hardware sales in February 2014, but by a narrow margin with Xbox One selling over 90 percent of what the PS4 sold in terms of unit sales…However, with Xbox One’s higher price point it led hardware sales on a dollar basis.”

Hardware sales were up 42 percent from February 2013 with sales of $347 million. This is primarily due to next generation console sales. Sales of new software was down 9 percent from last year bringing in $318 million (via Recode).

February was not a big month for releases, so it will be interesting to see what March numbers look like with the releases of South Park: Stick of Truth, Infamous: Second Son, Dark Souls II, and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

The release of Titanfall, along with the price drop of the Xbox One in the U.K. could also change the tide of the battle between Sony and Microsoft.

So do you think that Infamous: Second Son will help Sony keep its lead? Or will the release of Titanfall give Microsoft the upper hand for the month of March? Let us know in the comments below.
