Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment sequel in planning stages

According to Japanese games magazine Famitsu, a sequel to the PlayStation Vita game Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment has begun early planning stages.

Producer Yosuke Futami previously stated a sequel would be possible if Hollow Fragment’s sales exceeded that of its predecessor, the PSP game Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment. To date, Hollow Fragment has accomplished such a feat.

“I’m thinking about setting up plans for the sequel,” Futami told Famitsu in this week’s issue.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment will launch digital-only in North America on August 19 and in Europe on August 20. The Western releases will include an HD version of SAO: Infinity Moment.

Sword Art Online is a Japanese light novel series by Reki Kawahara about gamers trapped in a virtual-reality headset MMORPG who can only escape alive by finishing the game. The popular 2012 anime adaptation aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block and is streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll. A new second season premiered last Saturday and will continue simulcasting each week on Crunchyroll and Daisuki.
