Destiny: Rise of Iron quest – how to get Thorn, exotic hand cannon

Outside of a brand new story campaign and Crucible maps, Destiny: Rise of Iron offers a boatload of new armor and exotic weaponry, among which includes the much-anticipated return of one of the shared-world shooter’s most lethal weapons: Thorn. If you need any proof of why this weapon was so feared, just talk to anyone who has been through Destiny’s Crucible matches extensively during the game’s first year.

Yep, the exotic hand cannon makes its return for Year 3 of Destiny, bringing it upto date with current Light Levels. Thorn joins yet another classic Destiny exotic in Rise of Iron, namely the legendary Gjallarhorn rocket launcher. Find out in our latest Destiny: Rise of Iron guide how to unlock one of the game’s most desired firearms.

Destiny: Rise of Iron Thorn – how to get the exotic hand cannon

So, you want to get your mitts on Thorn, right? Well, unfortunately, you’ll need a bit of luck on your side to get things started. Thorn is obtained by completing a bounty that you receive randomly through the postmaster when you turn in bounties. Once you’ve nabbed this, you can get started on actually getting your hands on Thorn. The quest itself is quite similar to the bounty you had to undertake to acquire the original weapon in Year 1.

Step 1: Your first step on the quest is Echoes of Darkness. To accomplish this, simply finish the new Strike known as Wretched Eye.

Step 2: This is known as Harvest of the Lesser, and requires the player to travel to the Plaguelands and eliminate Fallen enemies. You’ll need to kill about 500 of them, so it’ll take some time.

Step 3: Remember ‘Feast Upon the Light’ from Year 1’s Thorn? Didn’t you just loathe the grind? Well, sadly, it’s back again, so you’ll have to put up with it if you want Year 3’s version of the exotic hand cannon. Here, you’ll need to defeat rival Guardians in the Crucible with Void-based attacks. The easiest way, aside from equipped a weapon with Void properties, is to use your Void subclass; this will ensure you unleash as much Void damage upon your foes as possible. 150 kills in total are required.

Step 4: The easiest of the lot: consume five Motes of Light.

Step 5: The final step in your quest requires you to track down a Skeleton Key (see our Destiny guide below for more details on that) and open the Strike hoard chest at the conclusion of The Abomination Heist Strike. Congrats, you just got your hands on Thorn: Year 3!
