Stardew Valley, the indie farming simulator that won multiple game of the year awards in 2016, recently arrived on PS4, so we’re a little behind the PC crowd who have been enjoying the stories – and occasionally turbulent relationships between its characters – for the good part of a year.
Nevertheless, with over 100 hours of gameplay now behind us, we thought we’d reflect on those things that have been chipping away at us. Yet, it’s also these annoyances, and the random nature of what might occur on any given day, that makes Stardew Valley so special.
Here’s 30 annoying things about Stardew Valley that you just wouldn’t change.
1.Heading happily to Pierre’s Store to buy your next batch of seeds that really need planting today, but forgetting he’s closed on Wednesdays. Then feeling miffed because you’re so impatient that you buy the seeds from JoJa Mart and pay over the odds.
2.When you go to the carpenters at 9 o’clock (opening time), ready to pay for your next farm building which you’ve been grinding to unlock for many hours, but then Robin just walks straight past you and out of the front door.
3.Accidently holding an item in your hand and gifting it to an NPC who hates it. Losing friendship points in the process, when all you wanted to actual do was speak to them.
4.When you’re trying to be clever and stay up until around 1.20am but you’re the other side of town and think you have just enough time to get back before 2am, but you fail and fall asleep along the way.
5.Digging up worms and just finding clay.
6..Catching your millionth carp in a row when all you want is a sturgeon or a catfish to complete the community center bundle.
7.Waiting over 20 seconds for a fish to bite, and then getting a pair of spectacles as a reward for your patience.
8.Waking up on the first day of Spring with your farm looking like a complete mess, and spending the day weeding.
9.Waking up and seeing that somehow more unwanted trees have managed to grow on your farm, seemingly overnight.
10.Having to head down to the Secret Woods every day to pick up 8 pieces of hardwood because you’re grinding to get enough (150) to upgrade your farmhouse.
11.When you need just one more Iridium bar to craft an item that you really want, like a sprinkler, but only have four iridium ore in your chest.
12.Spending all day down the mines and finding zero iridium ore, when all you want is just one.
13.Skeletons in the mines coming back to life and just hassling you when you’re just trying to find some damn iridium ore.
14.When you clear the quarry of rocks hoping it will regenerate with tons of ore and minerals, and go back a few days later and it’s full again with just stone.
15.Watching your spouse stay at home all day doing nothing while you break your back working on the farm.
16.When your husband/wife walks out on your marraige in the middle of the night, doesn’t even leave a note and leaves you to bring up your child on your own.
17.Willy always winning the ice fishing competition. He’s a fisherman by trade, he should be banned from entering! Plus we blatantly saw him catch three fish, and we caught four!
18.Filling all your crab pots up with bait and then making the long journey to the beach the next day to find they’re full of trash.
19.Having ungrateful animals that no matter what you seem to do, how many times you feed them or pat them, still don’t love you enough to give you a rabbit’s foot.
20.Visiting the gypsy woman every Friday and Sunday in the off chance that she will have the rabbit’s foot you’ve been after for three years to complete the final community center bundle, and she never has it.
21.Seeing Alex outside his house with his top off lifting weights in the summer – what an idiot!
22.Having to get off your horse when you’re in a rush (because the blacksmith closes in 20 minutes) to clear a log or stone so you can get past.
23.Running out of bait and heading all the way to Willy’s shack to buy some more only to find he’s gone out fishing.
24.When you bring magma geodes to Clint the blacksmith, he cracks it open and finds coal.
25.When no one wants to dance with you at the Flower Dance. Oh, that feeling of rejection!
26.When you bet all your money on either red or green on the spinning wheel at the Stardew Valley fair and lose.
27.Checking the weather forecast every day, praying for a rainy day so you can have a break from farming duties, but told it’s going to be “beautiful and sunny” again!
28.Feeling the need to make the most of Salmonberry Season and spending a big chunk of time each day shaking bushes, before you realise that you only have one jam maker and 75 salmonberries. What the hell’s a salmonberry anyway?
29. When you go to check on your livestock, and discover that their hay trays are empty because you didn’t plan properly. Then going to Marnie’s Ranch to buy some emergency hay but she’s gone off wandering around town. The next day there’s a festival, so your animals have to starve for two days, and hate you.
30.When your Secret Santa partner gives you an egg as a present on Christmas Day, and you gave them a gold-star super cucumber which took months to catch. Thanks a lot!
