The hardware powering PlayStation 4 is no longer cutting edge, says Naughty Dog/ICE programmer, Cort Stratton, but that doesn’t mean it won’t continue to pump out visually-stunning titles for many years to come.
Stratton’s comments come after a number of gamers spoke out to him on Twitter, asking whether or not there was any truth to claims that PS4 hardware is already out of date.
"The HW is no longer top-of-the-line, sure. That’s how consoles have always worked & has very little to do with game quality," he replied.
"For example: the PS3 is ~2005-era hardware, roughly. Compare TLOU (2013) to AAA PC games from 2005."
Stratton went on to point out that programmers are able to weave their magic and push hardware to its limits over a 5-10 year period, however.
"Squeezing 5-10 years of performance improvements out of a fixed hardware platform is what console programmers do best!"
With The Last of Us proving what the seven-year-old PS3 was capable of doing despite its age, one can only imagine what Sony is able to achieve with its latest home console five years or more down the line.
