Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has trademarked the name RESISTANCE, suggesting that there could be a revival of the shooter series on the cards.
The three main PS3 games in the Resistance franchise were developed by Insomniac Games who shut down the servers on its series in Spring 2014. In fact, in 2012, the US-based developer confirmed that it would not make any more Resistance games.
However, remasters of PS3 classics on PS4 are gathering pace. Indeed, Insomniac is currently working on bringing the Ratchet & Clank series back to PS4, albeit with some new gameplay additions. Is it out the question then that Insomniac may also be working on a Resistance reboot?
Well, we think a Resistance remaster is a possibility, but not in the hands of Insomniac who made it clear that the series is behind them. With SCEE registering the trademark rather that Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), who published the games in the Resistance series, it suggests that a European developer will be at the helm of its new RESISTANCE game, whatever that may be.
Now, which Sony studio, based in Europe, could possibly take over the franchise? Well, it has to be Guerilla Games, who is best known for the Killzone series. Indeed, we know that the studio is working on a currently announced project, which will be an FPS/action title. In June 2014, Guerilla Cambridge posted a job listing for an Audio Programmer stating “Guerrilla’s Cambridge Studio (UK) is looking for an experienced Audio programmer to work on forthcoming projects in a high profile, multi-million selling franchise.” Could this be a new Resistance, a Resistance reboot, or something completely different? We’ll let you know as soon we find out.
