Following a small blip in April where Microsoft’s Xbox One reigned supreme in the hardware sales department, it’s back to business as usual as PlayStation has reclaimed its crown as the best-selling console in North America for the month of May.
Announced by market research company NPD, Sony returned to the summit following a small lapse in April, quite literally one of only three months that it’s come in second-place since its launch back in November of 2013. As a result, PlayStation has built a healthy cumulative lead over its direct competitor with over 20,000,000 units sold – the fastest ever for a Sony console.
In light of the news, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA)has released a statement which reads:
”As we head into E3, we would like to thank gamers for making PS4 the top selling console and the leader in software sales in the U.S. in May. PS4 continues to be the cumulative sales leader in the US and globally with more than 20 million consoles already in the market. We are truly humbled by this success and we look forward to sharing what’s next for PS4 at our E3 press conference on June 15.”
Undoubtedly, the strong May release schedule which consisted of the likes of Project CARS, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood helped Sony push ahead and we expect the gap to widen even further if Sony has a strong E3 next week, which we suspect it will.
