Bungie has revealed that Destiny’s leveling system will be changed upon release of The Taken King expansion pack.
According to Game Informer, the current Light System, a leveling system that allows players to exceed level 20 by the procurement of specialized gear, will soon no longer exist. The standard of leveling up with experience gained by completing missions, killing enemies, and turning in bounties is being extended from level 20 to the new level cap of 40 with the expansion’s release.
Creative director Luke Smith explained the reasoning behind the change, stating that “the conflation of gear and character level led to this place where your identity was determined by things outside of your control. We don’t want to do that.”
It was also revealed that Destiny’s loot system will also face changes that will hopefully create a better player experience. Loot drops will pay more attention to the equipment you already have in order to help determine what will be dropped. This adjustment is designed to give players items that will appropriately improve character stats, increase the variety of gear received, and decrease repetition of the same item that is dropped.
Destiny: The Taken King has an expected release of September 15, 2015, and will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
