Sony trolled by Microsoft over lack of PS4 backwards compatibility

Sony generated a lot of press at E3 2013 when it took pot shots at Microsoft’s Xbox One DRM blunders by showcasing a tongue-in-cheek video of how to play used games on the PlayStation 4. Fast-forward just over two years, and Microsoft has hit back with its own video regarding the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility feature.

PS4, for the uninitiated, does not support b/c, as Sony has invested heavily in the cloud-based streaming service, PlayStation Now. However, this hasn’t stopped Microsoft from lobbing fresh mud at its rival by providing games with instructions on how to play their old games on Xbox One—an obvious dig at Sony’s previous trolling over Xbox One DRM shenanigans.

You can see Microsoft’s video below and we’ve also included Sony’s original ‘Used Game Instruction Video’ in case you missed it first time around.

Sony probably won’t be losing much sleep over Microsoft’s latest sniping, with PS4 reaching nearly 30 million units sold-in since its launch in November 2013. While it failed to top Xbox One in the U.S. for October 2015, the console remained the top-selling platform there for many months, with September proving incredibly successful for PlayStation Store revenue. Over in the U.K., PS4 has managed to track well ahead of the PS2 in terms of sales, and as of July this year managed to outsell Xbox One for every month of 2015.

In fact, PS4’s lead over its rival is so significant that even Microsoft itself has conceded that Xbox One may not be able to catch up to Sony going forward. With the industry approaching the lucrative Black Friday/Holiday season, it’ll be interesting to see how both PS4 and Xbox One manage to perform in the U.S., as no doubt both Sony and Microsoft will be battling it out heavily to win consumers’ loyalty. We’ll be sure to keep you informed of all the latest deals as they become available.
