Star Wars Battlefront is Strong with the Force, shipping 13 million copies

Electronic Arts has confirmed that Star Wars Battlefront has shipped 13 million copies worldwide since its launch last November, surpassing the publisher’s original internal expectations.

The figure includes around one million copies sold with the PlayStation 4’s Limited Edition Star Wars Battlefront bundle.

As mentioned, the 13 million figure has beaten the initial forecast that EA had set for the science-fiction shooter, as it originally predicted shipments of 9-10 million by March 2016. As such, the game has comfortably surpassed those expectations.

Interestingly, the 13 million mark also falls in line with what Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said, as he had predicted Battlefront to more around 12-13 million copies worldwide.

While it is worth noting the figure does not represent the number of copies sold to consumers, Blake Jorgensen, EA’s Chief Financial Officer, said that the publishing giant is ‘comfortably’ with how the game has performed.

We actually had a very strong sell-through during [Q3] as well as sell-in and there are some accounts obviously that are replenishing in there, as they get through their January timeframe," said Jorgensen, during an earnings call overnight. "We’re very comfortable with where the channel inventory is now."

Star Wars Battlefront is available now for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. The game takes place across numerous iconic locations from George Lucas’s celebrated movie universe, including Tatooine, Hoth, Endor, and more, as gamers side with either the Rebels or the Galactic Empire.

Each side has its own unique set of ‘Hero’ units, with the likes of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo, and Emperor Palpatine able to unleash their powers during a firefight. Aside from battling against ground troops, gamers also get to mix it up with the likes of AT-ATs and speederbikes as they fight for control of the galaxy.

EA confirmed earlier this month that Star Wars Battlefront’s first slice of premium DLC will arrive in March, with a new update now available to download featuring a host of balance changes.
