PlayStation VR event set for March 15 during GDC 2016 – will a price & launch date be announced?

Sony has sent out invitations for a special PlayStation VR press event at 2PM Pacific on March 15, the same week as the Game Developers Conference (both are in San Francisco).

PlayStation VR has a history of important announcements during GDC. Sony’s virtual reality headset was first revealed at GDC 2014, under the codename Project Morpheus. At last year’s GDC 2015, an updated prototype was unveiled with key changes and specs provided.

Heavy speculation points to Sony finally announcing the release date and/or price for the PlayStation VR.

The two other major VR competitors already revealed their prices and release windows. Oculus Rift will launch on March 28 for $599 and Valve’s HTC Vive is set for sometime in April for $799. Games industry analyst Michael Pachter predicts Sony can dominate the competition if PlayStation VR is priced less than $500.

PlayStation VR will provide PlayStation 4 owners the ability to enter the world of virtual reality. Demos on the platform shown thus far use the DualShock 4 controller or the PlayStation Move motion controllers, while the headset’s position is tracked by the PS4 camera.

Do you think the Ides of March will bring us the PlayStation VR price and launch date? We’ll keep you posted on any breaking news on PS VR leading up to and on the day of the event!
