Uncharted 4 is crowned the U.S. top-selling game for May 2016

The NPD Group has revealed that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has topped the U.S. software chart for May 2016.

The PlayStation 4-exclusive action-adventure sequel was able to fend off competition from the likes of DOOM and Overwatch to claim the top spot.

New launches were a major driver of the growth seen in May 2016 compared to May 2015,” commented NPD analyst, Liam Callahan. “Collectively, May 2016 new launches sold nearly double in unit sales and 108 percent more in dollars as new launches last May. These May 2016 launches represented 51 percent of overall new physical software sales for the month.”

Uncharted 4 also marked the best first month of sales for any game in the Uncharted series after Uncharted 3, which is remarkable given the fact that it launched during the holiday period in November 2011,” said Callahan. “The success of Uncharted helped Sony rank as the leading software publisher for May 2016.”

Uncharted 4’s success in the U.S. follows news that the game topped the PlayStation Store charts last month, as well as selling more than 2.7 million copies worldwide in just one week.

In terms of hardware, Sony has chosen not to comment on how well the PlayStation 4 sold during May. However, it’s worth noting that Microsoft’s statement did not confirm that the Xbox One outsold the PS4, so presumably Sony’s system came out on top.
