Sony has launched an unboxing video for the Collector’s Edition of the hotly anticipated The Last Guardian on PlayStation 4.
The Collector’s Edition offers a Steelbook version of the game itself, alongside a host of physical goodies, such as exclusive packaging, a Trico statue, art book, and more. Check out the unboxing video below, which features Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida and Sid Shuman.
The Last Guardian Collector’s Edition unboxed in all its glory
The Last Guardian is due out exclusively for PlayStation 4 in the U.S. on December 6 and in Europe on December 9. As Yoshida-san points out in the above video, the game has been in development for over eight years, and was originally announced way back at E3 2009 as a PS3-exclusive.
However, the project would suffer numerous setbacks over the next few years, including the departure of creator Fumito Ueda from SIE Studio Japan, although he continued to work on the game on a freelance basis. The game’s original release window of holiday 2011 was delayed, and it wouldn’t be until E3 2015 that we would see The Last Guardian again in action, this time re-revealed for the PS4.

Developed by Sony’s Japan Studio and Ueda-san’s newly-established genDESIGN, The Last Guardian recalls the events of a young boy who was captured under mysterious circumstances and imprisoned in a walled castle. However, he soon meets and befriends Trico, a large, griffin-like beast who aids the boy in overcoming the various puzzles and enemies located within the castle walls.
Outside of the core gameplay, which focuses on platforming and solving environmental puzzles, The Last Guardian focuses on the theme of friendship, as the boy and Trico grow to trust each other and develop a close bond throughout their journey.
