Hideo Kojima has indicated that a sequel to the upcoming Death Stranding is a possibility, although nothing is set in stone at this point.

Speaking during RTX Sydney over the weekend, the Kojima Productions bigwig touched on various aspects on the upcoming action game, which stars Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame and Casino Royale’s Mads Mikkelson. Kojima-san revealed that he received “many offers” in regards to potential partners for the upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive, including some outside of the gaming industry.
Kojima-san reportedly stated that Sony offered him 100 percent creative freedom for Death Stranding, and that partnering with such a massive company would give the game its best shot at success. In addition, he said that other companies may not have agreed showcasing a naked Reedus in the game’s debut trailer, whereas for Sony, it wasn’t an issue.
Elsewhere, the Metal Gear creator was asked if the game would feature any virtual reality elements, to which Kojima-san responded, “At this time, Death Stranding is not a VR game.” He also said that a sequel is not in the pipeline, though he would consider it if there is enough demand.
Kojima-san was also quizzed if the game would end up being released for the PS5 given the fact it’s still some years away from release. However, the game designer responded that the game is slated for PS4, noting Sony hasn’t even announced anything in regards to a successor to its current-generation console.
Death Stranding was announced during Sony’s E3 2016 press conference, with Kojima-san later confirming the game will be released at some point before 2019. The game will also feature director Guillermo Del Toro in some capacity, with Kojima-san revealing we can expect an open-world setting and various online elements to be present in the game. Death Stranding will be powered by the Decima engine, which is the same technology behind Horizon: Zero Dawn.
