Death Stranding multiple endings played down by Hideo Kojima

The upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive action title Death Stranding is unlikely to have multiple endings, creator Hideo Kojima has said during the latest episode of The Game Makers.

Discussing his approach to videogame storytelling, Kojima-san revealed that he’s more interested in having a concrete narrative in place with a definitive conclusion, as opposed to going down the multiple ending route that many titles have adopted.

There’s the multi-ending story technique and that’s a technique I’m not very interested in,” Kojima says. “I hope to make video games where the player’s destiny is set, and it’s really a matter of how the player takes the initiative. Using their willpower, courage and wisdom, to move the story forward.”

In that context, the player joins forces with other users and build bridges and makes connections in the storytelling,” he continued. “That’s what I hope to create, and that’s something I’m currently thinking a lot about.”

Death Stranding release date

Kojima-san announced Death Stranding during Sony’s E3 2016 press conference, later confirming the game would be released at some point before 2019. The upcoming title reunites the Metal Gear creator with actor Norman Reedus and director Guillermo Del Toro, who previously collaborated with Kojima on the cancelled psychological horror title, Silent Hills. Death Stranding will reportedly include open-world game elements and some form of online component, although not much else is known about the title at present.

Death Stranding is powered by the Decima engine, which is the same technology at the heart of Guerrilla Games’ upcoming Horizon: Zero Dawn. Be sure to check out the latest Death Stranding trailer, which Kojima Productions showcased last December running on the PS4 Pro.
