Quantic Dream has announced that Heavy Rain sales have surpassed 4.5 million worldwide across PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of the game.
The French developer confirmed the news in Facebook post, writing, “We are very proud to announce that combined sales of HEAVY RAIN on PS3 (released in 2010) and PS4 (released in 2016) are now in excess of 4,5 million units worldwide. Kuddos to our fans!”
Heavy Rain was originally released on the PS3 in early 2010, and sees gamers following the perspective of numerous characters as they attempt to solve the mystery of the Origami Killer. Much like other Quantic Dream titles, Heavy Rain serves as an interactive drama, with Quick Time Events punctuating each narrative-driven sequence, whether it’s something as mundane as giving your character a shave or escaping life-and-death situations.
Sony re-released the game with PlayStation Move compatibility later in the year and released the Taxidermist DLC, though future expansions for the critically acclaimed title were scrapped. Fast forward to 2016, and Heavy Rain was remastered for the PS4 alongside Quantic Dream’s Beyond: Two Souls. Despite the game’s success, Sony admitted it has never discussed the possibility of a follow-up.
While Heavy Rain attracted strong sales after its initial launch, Quantic Dream later revealed that it lost around five-ten million euros from pre-owned sales of the game in Europe. Stats following the game’s launch also confirmed some interesting figures regarding players’ success with Heavy Rain, including how many gamers finished the adventure and saved a key character.
Quantic Dream is currently developing its next project, Detroit: Become Human, which will be released exclusively for the PS4. It’s expected we’ll hear more about the highly anticipated title at E3 later this month, so stay tuned for more details.
