According to ComputerBase, the 40gb PlayStation 3 system is using a smaller heat pipe, and a 65nm Cell chip. This is great news if true, as these changes will ultimately mean cooler and more quite systems.
The European site also detailed that these changes had reduced the systems power requirements from 200 watts to 135 watts. While this reduction in your power bill will be almost zero, its nice to know that Sony is helping conserve.
The 40GB PS3 system launches this Friday for $400 and comes bundled with the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc. It is Sony’s big shot for holiday sales this year, and is going to be one of cheapest Blu-ray players on the market. It does, however, lack any form of backward compatibility, so it will be interesting how that will affect its sales numbers. One is for sure, if the system does indeed include a smaller chip and heat pipe, it should have a lower defect rate than its older counterparts.
Stay tuned for more on the newest PS3 SKU!
