We’re closing in on the fifth anniversary of Sony’s release of the PlayStation 3 in Japan and North America. For a while it looked as if the successor to the best selling PlayStation 2 wouldn’t live to mark the occasion. It took some time for the system to shine on its own as a must-have console for gamers, but thanks to the support of numerous developers, the PlayStation 3 has found a place to stay in tens-of-millions of homes.
As the fifth anniversary of the PS3 approaches, PSU will commemorate the event with several monthly articles, beginning with the five studios that define the PlayStation 3.
Insomniac Games: (Resistance series)
As a launch title and the first PS3 game to break the million sales mark, Resistance: Fall of Man received worldwide praise. With a compelling single player campaign and addictive multiplayer offering, Insomniac Game’s Resistance franchise is considered one of the best first-person shooters on the market.
Naughty Dog: (Uncharted series)
Before its release in 2007, Uncharted was already compared to the long running Tomb Raider franchise; however, once people got their hands on the action-adventure title it was clear that Nathan Drake’s journey would propel the genre to new uncharted territories.
Konami: (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots)
If there was one PS3 game to sell systems, it was Metal Gear Solid 4. Hideo Kojima’s first PS3 title hit the floor running when it was released back in 2008, easily selling two million copies worldwide in its first month and boosting hardware sales across the globe like no other game could.
Media Molecule: (LittleBigPlanet series)
Play. Create. Share. These three words best describe Media Molecule’s addictive and innovative user-generated platformer. Not only does LBP challenge your creativity and imagination, it’s also the type of title people of all ages can enjoy. With over five million user-created levels to explore, on top of the regular story levels (and numerous expansions), LittleBigPlanet is one of the few PS3 games that keeps on giving.
Polyphony Digital: (Gran Turismo series)
While racing fans were waiting extremely long for Gran Turismo 5, Polyphony Digital released Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in 2007/2008 as an appetizer to the main course. By the time GT5 hit store shelves in 2010, GT 5 Prologue had already sold over five million copies worldwide, making it the second highest selling PlayStation 3 exclusive. However, Prologue’s reign soon came to an end when Gran Turismo 5 shipped in December 2010, selling over six million copies worldwide in three months.
