70% of DC Universe Online users play via PS3

Sony has revealed that a whopping 70 per cent of the userbase for DC Universe Online play via the PlayStation 3.

Speaking with, Sony Online Entertainment chief John Smedley confirmed that only a small percentage of the superhero MMO’s audience consists of PC users, proving “free-to-play on PlayStation 3 is huge.”

"Right now, it’s us with DCUO and Free Realms and our friends at CCP with Dust 514 that are going to prove that this market really works," he said.

"There’s a lot of people that go through that store and it’s so easy to find and download these games that it’s a great business model. A lot of people have already stored their credit card information so it’s very frictionless if they do want to buy something,” added Smedley.

"It’s a business model of the future."

The executive went on to say that the platform holder was originally hesitant about testing the free-to-player waters, though DC Universe Online’s success quickly quelled any concerns.

"I admit there was a mindset where when you use the word ‘free’ people pause. ‘Wait a minute, what do you mean by free?’ But even then people want to see the results. With DC Universe Online the split that we’re seeing ended the debate right there," he said.

DC Universe Online launched in January 2011, and initially started life as a subscription-based service for $14.99/£9.99 per month. However, the game went free-to-play in November last year, with three models currently available: Free, Premium and Legendary.
