A PSP without UMDs; what’s next for retailers?

The next version of the PlayStation Portable will form a key part of Sony’s press conference at E3, according to sources speaking with British publication MCV. The sources state the new PSP will feature a cosmetic facelift and it will do away with the UMD disc format.

Michael Denny, Sony’s European studio boss, says the company is looking for “new and innovative PSP titles all the time.” He adds, “We already have downloadable content on the platform and are encouraging more of that as well. It’s the same as we have done on PS3.”

With the growing trend towards digital distribution across nearly all forms of media, retailers clearly have reason for concern. What is still left undetermined is if Sony will create partnerships with some retailers. Otherwise, consumers will turn their backs on brick and mortar shops.
