Kyle Rowley, game director on Alan Wake 2, has revealed that the development team at Remedy plucked inspiration from the Resident Evil franchise as a means of making players feel more vulnerable.
Speaking in an interview with the latest issue of EDGE magazine, Rowley explained how Capcom’s survival horror series influenced the team beyond just smart use of camera perspective.
Camera perspective and things like that, yes, there are good references from the recent Resident Evil games that we did look at. But not just because, oh, you know, it worked for them, it’s more like, how does that help us build the kind of experience we want? More claustrophobic; making the player feel more vulnerable; making the enemies feel more physical and dangerous.
Unlike its predecessor, Alan Wake 2 is a full-on survival horror experience, so it makes sense that Remedy would look to Resident Evil for inspiration. Alan Wake 2 is pencilled in for release on October 17, 2023 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
