Sonic Mania release date set for early next year

Sonic Mania is currently in development at Headcannon and PagodaWest Games for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. The game is scheduled for release in Q1 2017, and sees the Blue Blur return to his early 90s platforming roots, complete with 16-bit aesthetics resembling the classic Genesis titles.

In addition to featuring stages based on previous levels, Sonic Mania also introduces brand new zones for the Spiky Speedster to blast through. That is, assuming you want to control Sonic, as both Tails and Knuckles are also fully playable characters in the game.

Sonic Mania isn’t the only entry in the venerated platform series currently in development. A full-fledged 3D outing, known only as Project Sonic 2017, is also in the works for current-generation systems, though little is known about it at present.

SEGA celebrated 25 years of Sonic the Hedgehog back in July with a special anniversary event, where both titles were announced to the public.
