MST Financial senior analyst David Gibson has stated in a recently-published report that the PS6 release is likely to be a lot later than initial forecasts have predicted, as a result of the PS5 lifecycle likely being extended.
The report, which covers the performance of Sony Group and its probably future decisions via Sandstone Insights Japan, notes that sales of the PlayStation hardware manufacturer during Q3 its fiscal year are predicted to reach 1.8 trillion yen ($11.7 billion), with operating profit totalling 160 billion yen ($1.04 billion).
Sony’s Game & Network Services division saw strong performance during the quarter, the analyst said, thanks to solid sales for first and third-party software supporting the company’s third-party performance. As a result, Q3 results “are expected to beat market expectations, driven by sales of both in-house and third-party games.”
“Sony expects the PS5’s lifecycle to be extended, and the PS6’s release is likely to be delayed longer than many expected,” he added.
There’s been a lot of chatter about the PS6 over the past year or so, with well-known YouTube hardware insider, Moore’s Law Is Dead, stating last October that manufacturing for Sony’s next-generation system is likely to kick off in mid-2027.
The company’s plans for PS6 all revolve around a collaboration with AMD, known as Project Amethyst, which will offer a wide array of advancements in technology including Universal Compression, and it’s heavily rumoured that a handheld companion will also be released alongside the system.
