The creative director on Assassin’s Creed Unity has revealed that the French Revolution-based adventure packs a whopping 10,000 NPCs into one particular scene in the game.
Past entries typically pumped out about 200 NPCs on screen at any one time, though Unity frequently pushes around 5,000—with one scene churning out double that figure.
Speaking during a chat with Major Nelson, Alex Amancio noted that the developer “really harnessed every ounce of power” from Sony and Microsoft’s latest hardware. “These are real AI NPCs,” he added.
Unsurprisingly, he said that this level of detail wasn’t simply possible on previous-generation consoles, which includes new lighting and shading systems, plus a seamless transition between areas with no loading times.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is out in North America today and hits Europe on Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for our review shortly.
