Baldur’s Gate III DLC Didn’t Happen As It Would Have Been The ‘Boring’ Option, Says Larian Studios Boss

Larian Studios founder and CEO Swen Vincke has commented on the lack of a full paid expansion for Baldur’s Gate III, stating during an interview with GameSpot that doing so would have been the “boring” option.

Back in September 2023, Vincke, who also served as the director of the critically acclaimed RPG, said he wasn’t ruling out possible DLC for the game, but admitted generating ideas for a possible expansion is “very hard.” Obviously, this never happened, and a few months later Larian Studios confirmed that it would be on from the series and Dungeons and & Dragons for its next project.

It’s boring, is really the honest answer. We tried to be in the DLC business, talked about that with BG3… there’s just no passion… I mean happy player, happy business, but you also need a happy developer for a happy player. What we’re doing now makes developers way more happy.

We heard it’s what we were supposed to do, right? You’ve got a huge game, a huge hit, and you’ve gotta make DLC this and DLC that and DLC there… and money’s gonna pile up all high! And we just nodded and said, ‘Yeah we’ll make DLCs’. And then the moment that we had some time to think, we realised, ‘What are you doing?’. Progressive insight is not a bad thing, so sometimes you go down the wrong path and then say, ‘Oh fuck it’, and just change course.

Speaking during the same interview, Vincke revealed that Larian Studios is now ‘deep in the trenches‘ on its next RPG, which he described as ‘massively ambitious.’ As for Baldur’s Gate III, the developer has finally waved goodbye to the title following the release of Update 8 earlier this month, which added key features including Cross-Play and Photo Mode.
