Bayonetta 3 next for Hideki Kamiya following Scalebound cancellation?

The cancellation of Xbox One-exclusive Scalebound is still sending major ripples across the web this week, but with any luck, creator Hideki Kamiya may attempt to move past the game’s disappointing axe by creating a third entry in his over-the-top action series, Bayonetta.

While nothing official regarding the Devil May Cry creator’s next project has been confirmed as of yet, it’s worth casting your minds back to an interview Kamiya-san did over the summer, where he confirmed outright to Polygon that he wanted to make Bayonetta 3 once Scalebound was wrapped.

"To answer your question straightly, yes,” he said, in regards to whether or not he wanted to make a new Bayonetta. "It’s actually something I’ve been thinking a lot about," he continued. "We’ve talked a lot about it internally at the company and I’ve written some outlines for what the game would be. And I feel really confident it would be cool if we got the chance to make it."

Of course, things have changed since then, as Microsoft announced earlier this week that it had cancelled Scalebound amidst reported development issues. The game was originally announced back at E3 2014, and was set to launch at some point in 2017 as one of the major Xbox One-exclusives for the year. Whether or not the IP may be picked up by Sony or Nintendo at this point remains to be seen, but needless to say, it’s a disappointing loss to the industry and consumers alike.

Regardless, with the game no longer in the pipeline, it would appear that Kamiya-san is now free to work on the proposed Bayonetta 3, although we don’t know his immediate plans and probably won’t for a while yet. Still, he’s at least made it clear that he wants to make a third installment in the series, so there’s a very likely possibility it will be his next project.

Bayonetta was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in January 2010, and a sequel followed exclusively for the Wii U in fall 2014. The series shares many similarities to Devil May Cry with its stylish, ostentatious combat and gameplay sequences, and focuses on the exploits of the titular, shapeshifting witch as she battles against armies of supernatural foes.
