BBC applauds ‘brilliant’ PS3 iPlayer quality

Anthony Rose, head of digital media technology for the BBC, has heaped praise on Sony’s efforts with the PlayStation 3 iteration of the iPlayer, claiming the service offers a picture quality “almost as good as broadcast television.”

The service made its appearance earlier this month as part of the PS3’s recently released Firmware v3.0 update, and can be found as an embedded application on the console’s XMB once you get your system up to speed.

Speaking on the BBC Internet Blog, Rose commented, “Sony has done a great job of enhancing the PS3’s Flash playback experience, and the latest V3.0 firmware update allows for a substantial improvement in the playback experience.”

“Over the past year, we’ve also done a lot of tuning and enhancements to our iPlayer video encoding. Put the two together and the result is an iPlayer on PS3 with brilliant video quality – almost as good as broadcast television.”

So there you have it, folks. Not only can you catch up with all the latest goings on in EastEnders from the comfort of your PS3, you also have the added bonus of watching it in half decent quality to boot.
