And you don’t always have to go to the nearest city park. There are rewarding hiking trails scattered all over the country that are also easy to reach from the city. Often by bus and train, so you don’t need a car. Green hiking tours at a glance:

1st with the Panke into the center of Berlin

It only takes around half an hour on the S-Bahn to get from the hustle and bustle of Berlin to tranquil Buch (Pankow). The tour starts from here and leads from the north-eastern edge of the capital to the Bundestag.

It runs along the small Panke and later the large Spree, through lots of greenery and past former industrial buildings, writes the German Hiking Association (length: 19.3 kilometers; walking time: around 5.5 hours).

2nd Waldheimer Höhenrundwanderweg in Saxony

Waldheim lies almost in the middle of an imaginary triangle between the major Saxon cities of Dresden, Chemnitz and Leipzig. The tour leads around the small town in the Zschopau valley, with views of Waldheim, the river and nearby Kriebstein Castle.

Two interesting landmarks along the way: the Waldheim prison, which is the oldest prison still in operation in Germany, and the Napoleon Stone, which marks the point where the French commander’s troops crossed the Zschopau in 1813 (length: 11.7 kilometers; walking time: around 3 hours).

3rd green belt circular hiking trail around Frankfurt am Main

This hiking tour stretches around the banking metropolis of Frankfurt am Main. It is divided into several individual stages, each of which can be easily reached by public transport.

4th Heideschleife Schwarze Berge near Hamburg

According to the hiking association, it takes around 45 minutes by S-Bahn and bus from Hamburg Central Station to Ehestorf, where this tour begins. The hike leads past the Schwarze Berge wildlife park with bears, lynxes and wolves, through dense forests and across heathland.

At Karlstein, where you also pass, the Franconian king Charlemagne is said to have once rested after a battle. The trail to the south of the Hanseatic city requires a good level of fitness (length: 17 kilometers; walking time: around 4.5 hours).

5th Pingen hiking trail in the Northern Eifel

Nature and mining – that’s what this hiking tour near Cologne is all about. The Pingenwanderweg trail takes its name from the Pingen, which are former ore mining sites. Along the way, there are a number of information boards about the once hard work in the pings.

The tour starts in the municipality of Kall, around an hour’s train ride from Cologne Central Station. The trail is one of 18 Eifel trails. This is the name given to a series of hiking trails in the northern Eifel (length: 11 kilometers; walking time: around 3 hours).

6th hiking close to the city: Eichstätter Panoramaweg in Upper Bavaria

Eichstätt is idyllically situated in the Altmühltal valley. The small university town is within easy reach of several major cities: Augsburg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Munich and Ingolstadt, which is particularly close.

7th Nine Ränkle’s Path in the Stuttgart metropolitan region

The tour leads up the Hohbergkopf on soft forest paths, with a “wonderful view” of the Three Emperors’ Mountains Hohenstaufen, Rechberg and Stuifen, three striking peaks of the Swabian Alb, as the hiking association describes. The trail is ideal for beginners.

Bear in mind that it takes around 30 minutes to walk from Plüdershausen train station to the starting point of the trail. Stuttgart is half an hour away by train (length: 7.5 kilometers; walking time: around 2.5 hours).
