The nominees for Best Shooter of 2010 are…
And the winner is…
Among a sea of quality first and third person shooter titles released in 2010, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops stood out for one reason: it had an absolutely ridiculous budget. From a a business perspective, Activision Blizzard Inc. tried harder than ever to leverage the Call of Duty name to generate millions upon millions of sales — and it definitely worked. Meanwhile, the talented team at Treyarch had mountains of money to allocate to several Black Ops development teams within the company (three separate teams for single-player, competitive multiplayer, and co-op play), resulting in an absolute boatload of content on the disc. In the package is an explosive (if fairly restrictive) single-player campaign, a polished (if somewhat banal) competitive multiplayer, a neat Dead Ops arcade mini-game, and an expanded Zombies mode. Sure, Black Ops might not win any awards for innovation, but we can’t deny that it was the shooter we enjoyed playing most in 2010. Level 40 zombies, here we come.
And the Community Award goes to…
The PSU community clearly favors DICE’s (admittedly excellent) Battlefield: Bad Company 2 over Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, with a resounding 45.5% of the votes for Best Shooter of 2010 going to the former. Black Ops skydived into second with 29.3% of the votes. Vanquish slid firmly into third with 14.1% of the vote, while BioShock 2 snagged 10.1% of the vote. Singularity, as its name forecasted, only received a single percent of the vote.
