Uncharted 2: Among Thieves‘ gripping train wreck sequence has been voted by the PlayStation gaming community as the greatest Uncharted moment of all time.
Naughty Dog took part in a special Twitch stream to celebrate the announcement, where they played through the iconic sequence and spoke a little on what it took to get the scene off the ground. During the same stream, the studio admitted it wasn’t entirely satisfied with the game’s predecessor when it first shipped for PS3.
Uncharted 2 will form part of the upcoming Unchared: The Nathan Drake Collection on PlayStation 4, which remasters Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in addition to the critically acclaimed 2009 action-adventure. While Uncharted: Golden Abyss, the PlayStation Vita-exclusive prequel from Sony Bend, was considered for inclusion, Naughty Dog decided to leave it out of the bundle for narrative reasons.
Aside from featuring enhanced ports of the three core Uncharted games, the Nathan Drake Collection also includes a new Photo Mode, a tougher difficulty setting, plus access to December’s planned multiplayer beta for the hotly anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. However, the collection eschews the multiplayer components of both Uncharted 2 and 3.
Uncharted 2 is widely considered to be the best entry in the franchise to date (at least until Uncharted 4 arrives on the scene, then things could well change in that respect), as well as one of the greatest PS3 titles ever released. It currently holds a metacritic of 96, beating out the likes of Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us. The game sees Nathan Drake on the hunt for the lost city of Shambhala, and sees him tangling with a host of new characters, including Chole Fraser, Harry Flynn and the villainous Zoran Lazarveric.
The Uncharted franchise has sold a whopping 21 million units worldwide since its inception in 2007, making it one of Sony’s biggest first-party franchises, standing alongside the likes of God of War and Gran Turismo. However, hero Nathan Drake’s part in the series is set to come to an end with the next chapter, and Naughty Dog has even admitted continuing the series without him is difficult to imagine.
Uncharted 4 is due out exclusively on PS4 on March 18, 2016, and was originally scheduled to ship in the latter half of 2015. However, Naughty Dog made the difficult to decision to delay the launch to meet the high standards set by the studio. It later emerged that part of the delay was down to getting the ending sequence just right.
