Bethesda Is Looking At Ways To Shorten The Length Between Game Releases, Says Todd Howard

Speaking during an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda‘s Todd Howard has revealed that the studio is looking at ways to increase its output by shortening the length between major game releases.

Bethesda is known for taking a lengthy period of time between major game releases. For example, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion came out in 2006, while its sequel, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, didn’t arrive until 2011. Fallout 4 arrived in 2015 and there’s still no release date for the next major entry in that franchise.

You know, they do take a long time, and so I think one of the things we’re focused on here is obviously making sure they’re of the highest quality, but also finding ways to increase our output, because we don’t want to wait that long either, right. It’s never our plan, but we want to make sure we get it right.

Elsewhere, Howard was quizzed if Bethesda had thought about partnering with external studios on non-numbered Fallout games following the series’ increased popularity on the back of Amazon Prime’s TV series.

I would say we’ve always had those conversations. We did a lot of things for the show. It might seem like there isn’t a big new game out, but we added content into 76 for the show. 76 has a really great map expansion that’s coming this summer with Skyline Valley.

So, we look at what we’re doing with the franchise and say, do we still feel good about – I can’t reveal it now – our runway for Fallout as a franchise? When is season 2 happening? What are we doing on mobile? What are we doing on 76? What are we doing with this thing? What are we doing with this other thing? When are these landing?

Earlier his month, Howard revealed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is the next major game from Bethesda, but he is being careful not to put a date on the game or the next Fallout title.
