BioShock Infinite outsells God of War, Tomb Raider in March

According to data published today by the NPD Group, Bioshock Infinite was March 2013’s top-selling game in the United States, outselling Tomb Raider, Gears of War: Judgement, God of War: Ascension, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. In doing so, BioShock Infinite also netted the franchise’s highest first month sales.

The top ten sellers for this period can be found below:

1. Bioshock Infinite*
2. Tomb Raider*
3. Gears of War: Judgement**
4. God of War: Ascension
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops II*
6. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon
7. MLB 13: The Show
8. NBA 2K13*
9. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct*
10. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3*

* = multi-platform release
** = Xbox 360 exclusive

It is interesting to note that each of the above titles are sequels, adding to the ongoing debate that there is a drought of innovation in the industry, which may only be exacerbated in the coming generation.

The NPD report also analyzed several changes in the market over the past year. Hardware sales went down 32 percent in March to $221.6 million, while software sales simultaneously rose by two percent to $602.4 million.

Of greater interest, March 2013 saw 20 percent fewer new releases, but 70 percent greater sales among new releases than last year. At least a couple contributing factors may exist. The gaming community could be more dedicated than ever to specific series and buying up the sequels. Then again, is the industry witnessing improved game quality year-over-year, thereby garnering more interest and achieving greater sales?
