BioWare’s Only Big Project After Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is Mass Effect 5, Says Studio Veteran Mark Darrah

Mass Effect 5 is now the only major project in the pipeline at BioWare following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, according to Mark Darrah, a veteran of the studio who departed after nearly 24 years back in 2021.

Speaking in one of his members-only videos on BioWare’s plans after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, he noted that while the studio is known for juggling multiple projects at once, things have now totally flipped, as it’s only focussing one title.

Expanding further, he pointed to Star Wars The Old Republic shifting out of EA and into the Broadsword Online Games back in 2023, which according to Darrah, “for the first time since arguably 1995, maybe not even then, BioWare is only working on a single project, which is Dragon Age: The Veilguard.” He added that once BioWare has finished up on any final patches for The Veilguard, since there’s no plans for DLC, “there’s only Mass Effet, so everyone at BioWare will be working on Mass Effect.”

However, Darrah was quick to note that “Mass Effect isn’t ready to suddenly have a team of 250, 300 people working on it.” Right now, “there is. A need to find other work for them within the rest of the EA organisation while the Mass Effect team figures out what Mass Effect is going to be, figures out the structure, and then gets ready to ramp up to a much bigger size team.”

This might be great because what it means is that BioWare, for the first time really ever, is able to singularly focus on a single project, is able to put all of its tension on a single project, is able to put everything it has towards a single goal, which is making the best Mass Effect it possibly can.”

BioWare is keeping its cards close to its chest in regards to details on the new Mass Effect game, although in October last year assured fans that it would maintain the ‘mature tone of the original trilogy.’
